| PALOS VERDES PENINSULA SCHOOLS PUBLIC SCHOOLS: The Palos Verdes School District serves the four cities of the Palos Verdes Peninsula (Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills Estates, and Rolling Hills) as well as an unincorporated area known as Palos Verdes Peninsula. The school district currently has an enrollment of approx. 11,900 students and consists of 3 high schools (two comprehenxive high schools and one continuation school) , 3 intermediate schools (grades 6-8), 10 elementary schools, and one early childhood development center. The school district enjoys an excellent reputation, which attracts many families to the Peninsula. The schools enjoy a high parent participation rate (particularly in the two elementary schools which require parental participation in the school room). Palos Verdes Unified School District web site. Many of the schools are California Distinguished Schools, and the schools in the District consistently rank among the top in California on standardized state test scores, such as the API and Star 9 tests (see results below). During 2003-2004, the Palos Verdes Unified School District ranked third (behind San Marino and La Canada) for all Los Angeles County School Districts in SAT results, with an average total SAT score of 1172, and 65% receiving a total score in excess of 1000. The State of California now has a great website to compare information about the schools in an area, with information about test scores, Advanced Placement Courses, student/teachere ratio, per student spending, and much more! In their December 10, 2007 issue , U.S. News & World Report ranked both Palos Verdes Peninsula High School (#89) and Palos Verdes High (#93) in the top 100 high schools in the United States. Federal officials have honored Peninsula High as a Bule Ribbon School (one of 35 nationwide ), and also designated it as one of just 10 "New American High Schools". In addition, the Wall Street Journal ranked Peninsula in the top 10 of all public and private high schools. Palos Verdes Peninsula High School is located in Rolling Hills Estates, and Palos Verdes High is located in Palos Verdes Estates and both high schools are California Distinquished Schools, with open enrollment to students on the Peninsula (they do not have enrollment boundaries). Palos Verdes HIgh has a unique class scheduling structure, called block scheduling, where students attend three extended periods each day, alternating with their other three classes each day. Peninsula High has a more traditional structure of the same periods for all classes each day. Over 97% of graduating seniors go on to continue their education.
