1) Carnival Cruise Lines offers a shuttle bus to the walled city of Dubrovnik, but to save money, we decided to make the 10 minute walk to the city bus station and take the very inexpensive city bus (about 3 euros). It was fine for the trip to the city, but for the trip on the way back to the ship, the city buses seemed to stop running for quite a while, and panic set in among several hundred people trying to catch the bus back to the ship at the end of the day. Finally, we just jumped on the ship's shuttle bus for the ride back. 2) Definitely pay to walk the wall surrounding the city. It is about a 2 mile walk, but not particularly strenuous. It is a small fee but well worth it. 3) You do not need to pay for any excursions offered by the Cruise lines. Just plan to spend the day walking the wall and the streets of Dubrovnik.
