Texas is bounded by Oklahoma on the north, by Arkansas and Louisiana on the east, by Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico on the south, and by New Mexico on the west. Texas is the 2nd largest state by area, and with a population of approx. 20.9 million, is also the 2nd most populous state. Major industries in Texas include petroleum and natural gas, farming (cotton, livestock), steel, banking, insurance, and tourism. Texas was admitted to the Union as the 28th state on December 29, 1845. Texas derived its name from The Caddo Indians of eastern Texas who called their group of tribes the "Tejas," meaning "those who are friends". The nickname of Texas is "The Lone Star State".
Texas has several state taxes, including a state sales tax, and property taxes colleted at the local level, but has no personal income tax.
