PALOS VERDES PENINSULA SCHOOLS
PUBLIC SCHOOLS:
The Palos Verdes School District serves the four cities of the Palos Verdes Peninsula (Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills Estates, and Rolling Hills) as well as an unincorporated area known as Palos Verdes Peninsula. The school district currently has an enrollment of approx. 11,900 students and consists of 3 high schools (two comprehenxive high schools and one continuation school) , 3 intermediate schools (grades 6-8), 10 elementary schools, and one early childhood development center. The school district enjoys an excellent reputation, which attracts many families to the Peninsula. Many of the schools are California Distinguished Schools, and the schools in the District consistently rank among the top in California on standardized state test scores, such as the API and Star 9 tests (see results below). During 2003-2004, the Palos Verdes Unified School District ranked third (behind San Marino and La Canada) for all Los Angeles County School Districts in SAT results, with an average total SAT score of 1172, and 65% receiving a total score in excess of 1000. In their December 10, 2007 issue , U.S. News & World Report ranked both Palos Verdes Peninsula High School (#89) and Palos Verdes High (#93) in the top 100 high schools in the United States. Federal officials have honored Peninsula High as a Blue Ribbon School (one of 35 nationwide ), and also designated it as one of just 10 "New American High Schools". In addition, the Wall Street Journal ranked Peninsula in the top 10 of all public and private high schools.
Schools: Attendance Boundaries Note: The two comprehensive high schools do not have attendance boundaries). Those students who live in the Eastview area ( Area 88 in the boundary matrix in the link above ) have a one-time election to enroll in either the Palos Verdes School District ( attending Dapplygray Elementary and Miraleste Intermediate ) , or the Los Angeles Unified School District ( Dodson Middle School and Crestwood Elementary School. ). Those living in the Eastview area do not pay the bonded indebtedness on their property tax bills ( 2009/2010 of $21.64 per $100,000 valuation ) for the Palos Verdes School District, but instead are billed for the Los Angeles Unified School District boded indebtedness on their property tax bills (2009/2010 of $151 per $100,000 valuation ). Eastview residents vote only on School Board elections for Los Angeles Unified Schools regardless of whether they have elected to attend the Palos Verdes School District.

Palos Verdes Peninsula High School is located in Rolling Hills Estates, and Palos Verdes High is located in Palos Verdes Estates and both high schools are California Distinquished Schools, with open enrollment to students on the Peninsula (they do not have enrollment boundaries). Palos Verdes HIgh has a unique class scheduling structure, called block scheduling, where students attend three extended periods each day, alternating with their other three classes each day. Peninsula High has a more traditional structure of the same periods for all classes each day. Over 97% of graduating seniors go on to continue their education. Palos Verdes Unified School District has some of the highest test scores in the state.

API SCHOOL TEST SCORES FOR 2011-12:
The schools in the Palos Verdes Peninsula School District generally did very well in the State API student test scores for 2011-12 released by the State . In 2011, all of the schools in the district scored in the top 10% of the state, except for Miraleste Intermediate school which ranked in the top 20%. The schools were also ranked against other schools with similar demographics. Elementary schools that ranked particularly high in this ranking were Lunada Bay Elementary, with a ranking of 9 ( from 1 to 10), up considerably from last year's ranking of 2, Silver Spur Elementary with a 9, and Cornerstone and Point Vicente elementary schools with an 8,
Both Palos Verdes and Ridgecrest Intermediate schools ranked very high against similar schools demographically, with Palos Verdes Intermediate scoring a 9 and Ridgecrest scoring an 8. Palos Verdes High as well as Peninsula High also both scored well compared to similar schools, with both schools scoring a 7, meaning they were in the top 30% of schools with similar demographics.
