Alabama is the 30th largest state, by area, and has a population of 4,447,100 (2000 census), which ranks it as the 23rd most populous state. Major industries in Alabama include agriculture (cotton, corn, peanuts, soybeans, poultry, and livestock), hydroelectric power, mining (coal, limestone, iron ore), and steel-making. Alabama means "tribal town" in the language of the local Creek Indians. Alabama was admitted to the Union as the 22nd state on December 14, 1819.
Alabama collects several different taxes including state individual income taxes, sales tax, and property tax.

Huntsville - 164,146 people
Birmingham is the largest city in the state and was named after Birmingham, the major industrial city in England. Birmingham is one of the major industrial and business centers in the South. In addition to manufacturing, Birmingham has become a major medical research center, and a regional banking and publishing center. Biotechnology and information technology have also become important.
Montgomery, the capital, is located in the south central part of the state. Montgomery was named after General Richard Montgomery who died in the Revolutionary War.
Mobile is the only salt water port for Alabama and is located on the Gulf coast shores of Alabama.
