The state's name "Alaska" is a Russian version of an Aleutian word, Alakahak, for "peninsula," "great lands," or "land that is not an island". Of the United States 20 largest mountains, 17 are located in Alaska. There are more than 50 million acres of National Parks in Alaska.The United States purchase Alaska in 1867 from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million dollars, in what became known at the time as "Seward's Folly" after Secretary of State William H. Seward. Alaska was admitted to the Union as the 49th state on January 3, 1959. Oil production is the major industry in Alaska.

Alaska has no state individual income tax and also does not have a state sales tax, although many local jurisdictions impose a local sales tax. Alaska finances its state government through petroleum revenues collected at the state level on oil production.

Anchorage, with 260,283 residents is the largest city in Alaska.
