The nickname of New Hampshire is "The Granite State", for its abundance of granite bedrock and symbolically for the state's tradition of limited government. It is the second-most-forested state in the country, after Maine, in terms of percentage of land covered by woods. Hampton Beach is a popular local summer destination. Other recreational attractions include skiing and other winter sports, and visiting summer cottages on many lakes in the state.
