New York is bordered by Canada to the north, by Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts to the east, by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, and Lake Erie, Canada, and Lake Ontario to the west. New York is the 27th largest state by area, and with a population of approx. 19 million, is the 3rd most populous state.

New York was admitted to the Union as the 11th state on
July 26, 1788. Major industries in New York include finance, communications, international trade, publishing, fashion, communications, farming (fruit and dairy), and tourism.The English took over of the area that had been called "New Netherland" in 1664, and renamed it New York to honor of the Duke of York (York is a city in England). The nickname of New York is "The Empire State". New York City serves as the financial center of the developed economies of the world, and is also host to the United Nations.

New York has several state taxes, including a personal income tax, state sales tax, and property taxes.
