North Carolina is bordered by Virginia to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, by South Carolina and Georgia to the soouth, and by Tennessee to the west. The Appalachian Mountains run through the western part of the state. North Carolina is the 28th largest state by area, and with a population of approx. 8 million, is the 11th most populous state. Major industries in North Carolina include farming (tobacco, poultry), textiles, and furniture.

North Carolina was admitted to the Union as the 12 state on November 21, 1789. The nickname of North Carolina is "The Tar Heel State". North Carolina was named to honor King Charles I (Carolus is Latin for Charles).

North Carolina has several state taxes, including a personal income tax, state sales tax, and property taxes, collected and assessed at the local level.
